While meeting with a consultant to discuss a new church brochure that would be designed specifically for prospective members, our pastor was asked a basic question: "Who is your competition?"
He replied, "The Sunday newspaper and the coffeepot. That is, indifference. Many people do not think that attending corporate worship makes a difference in their lives."
The more I reflected on his comment, the more convinced I became that he was right. "In-difference" is the key!
Christians are "called out" of the world by God and grafted into the body of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit at baptism. As new creations "in Christ," Christians are different. And, through corporate worship, redemption becomes a present reality in the hearing of the Word and the partaking of the sacraments.
