Current News Humor

Those who can't laugh at themselves leave the job to others.

Lectionary Passages for September 10, 2006 Proper 18 (23)
[Year B]

Proverbs 22:1-2  THEME:  RESPONSIBILITY

Proverbs 22

1 Choose a good reputation over great riches, for being held in high esteem is better than having silver or gold.

2The rich and the poor have this in common: The LORD made them both.

Proverbs 22:8-9  THEME:  JUSTICE

8Those who plant seeds of injustice will harvest disaster , and their reign of terror will end.

9Blessed are those who are generous, because they feed the poor.

Proverbs 22:22-23  THEME:  POOR

22Do not rob the poor because they are poor or exploit the needy in court.

23
For the LORD is their defender . He will injure anyone who injures them.

Psalm 125  THEME:  SECURITY

Psalm 125

A song for the ascent to Jerusalem.
   1
    Those who trust in the LORD are as secure as Mount Zion;
they will not be defeated but will endure forever.

    2
Just as the mountains surround and protect Jerusalem,
so the LORD surrounds and protects his people, both now and forever.

    3
The wicked will not rule the godly,
for then the godly might be forced to do wrong.

    4
O LORD, do good to those who are good,
whose hearts are in tune with you.

    5
But banish those who turn to crooked ways, O LORD.
Take them away with those who do evil.
And let Israel have quietness and peace.

Mark 7:24-37  THEME:  OUTSIDERS

The Faith of a Gentile Woman
24Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre.  He tried to keep it secret that he was there, but he couldn't. As usual, the news of his arrival spread fast. 25Right away a woman came to him whose little girl was possessed by an evil spirit. She had heard about Jesus, and now she came and fell at his feet. 26She begged him to release her child from the demon's control.

Since she was a Gentile, born in Syrian Phoenicia, 27Jesus told her, "First I should help my own family, the Jews. It isn't right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs."
28She replied, "That's true, Lord, but even the dogs under the table are given some crumbs from the children's plates."
29"Good answer!" he said. "And because you have answered so well, I have healed your daughter." 30And when she arrived home, her little girl was lying quietly in bed, and the demon was gone.

Jesus Heals a Deaf and Mute Man
31Jesus left Tyre and went to Sidon, then back to the Sea of Galilee and the region of the Ten Towns.  32A deaf man with a speech impediment was brought to him, and the people begged Jesus to lay his hands on the man to heal him. 33Jesus led him to a private place away from the crowd. He put his fingers into the man's ears. Then, spitting onto his own fingers, he touched the man's tongue with the spittle.
34And looking up to heaven, he sighed and commanded, "Be opened!" 35Instantly the man could hear perfectly and speak plainly!

36Jesus told the crowd not to tell anyone, but the more he told them not to, the more they spread the news, 37for they were completely amazed . Again and again they said, "Everything he does is wonderful. He even heals those who are deaf and mute."

James 2:1-10  THEME:  GOOD WORKS

James 2

A Warning against Prejudice
1My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim that you have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people more than others?

2For instance, suppose someone comes into your meeting dressed in fancy clothes and expensive jewelry, and another comes in who is poor and dressed in shabby clothes. 3If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich person, but you say to the poor one, "You can stand over there, or else sit on the floor"--well, 4doesn't this discrimination show that you are guided by wrong motives?

5Listen to me, dear brothers and sisters. Hasn't God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in faith? Aren't they the ones who will inherit the Kingdom he promised to those who love him? 6And yet, you insult the poor man! Isn't it the rich who oppress you and drag you into court? 7Aren't they the ones who slander Jesus Christ, whose noble name you bear?

8
Yes indeed, it is good when you truly obey our Lord's royal command found in the Scriptures: "Love your neighbor as yourself."  9But if you pay special attention to the rich, you are committing a sin, for you are guilty of breaking that law. 10And the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as the person who has broken all of God's laws.

James 2:14-17

Faith without Good Deeds Is Dead
14Dear brothers and sisters, what's the use of saying you have faith if you don't prove it by your actions? That kind of faith can't save anyone. 15Suppose you see a brother or sister who needs food or clothing, 16and you say, "Well, good-bye and God bless you; stay warm and eat well"--but then you don't give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?

17So you see, it isn't enough just to have faith . Faith that doesn't show itself by good deeds is no faith at all--it is dead and useless.
