The United States no longer
leads the world in home ownership, though it remains one of our greatest longings. Until 1980, the percentage of citizens owning homes kept increasing, reaching 65.6 percent. Since then the percentage has declined until, in 1994, 64.2 percent own their own home. In Australia, 70 percent own homes. New Zealand, Great Britain, and the United States have programs to assist first-time buyers. Our home doesn't have to be in Beverly Hills, California or Sands Point, New York to be important to us. It doesn't have to appreciate 5 to 10 percent a year to be valuable. The human race needs a yard, a house, a few feet of privacy—a place to call home, a place to return to at the end of a long day, where we can feel at ease and be ourselves. Wherever we are, home seems a better place. Whenever we go away, it is always a pleasure knowing we will be able to return. Quote this article on your site | Views: 476 | Print | E-mail
