A study by the National Cancer
Institute, printed in the New England Journal of Medicine, indicated that certain anticancer drugs could actually cause the disease they supposedly cured. In this instance, Semustine was the culprit. While it kills melanomas and malignancies of the brain, lung, and digestive tract, it also brings a high risk of leukemia at a later time. The Food and Drug Administration finally removed it from use because of its dangerous side effects. It offered the potential of a cure worse than the disease it conquered! Christ's forgiveness—the cure for our sins—will not create worse problems for us later, cropping up in a different form of the malignant sin he first overcame. He rescues us completely from the penalty and presence of sin. When we ask Christ to eradicate the deadly spiritual pestilence, we can be absolutely sure that his cure is initially and ultimately successful.
