The late William O. Douglas once rode a freight train from Yakima, Washington, to New York City to study law at Columbia University. He arrived grimy, weary, and hungry. His clothes were a mess. His suitcase was held together by a rope. He had six cents in his pocket.
Despite unbelievable disappointments and sacrifice, seventeen years later he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court where he served for thirty-six years.
