"Why are only certain trees green during the winter?" It seems that many, many years ago, Manitou, the Great Spirit, allowed all things to roam freely on the face of the earth. Even as the elk and bear, the deer, the fox and humans could move from place to place, the trees could move, too. They could seek water, the warmth of the sun, and shade in the shadow of a hill when the heat was too intense. They did not move quickly like the deer or the rabbit, of course. They would move slowly and ponderously-the giant elm, the poplar and the mighty oak and the hickory. They would roam the valleys and hillsides during the spring, summer and fall, then rest for the winter to await the coming of a new spring. There came a time when these giants of the forest quarreled among themselves. One was jealous of the other. The elm wanted the hillside, the poplar wanted the valley where the oak was. The hickory wanted to be near the stream where the beech stood. Only the pines and firs seemed satisfied not to quarrel. They were small trees, and because they had long, pointy shaped needles for leaves, they were not welcomed by the other trees. The Great Spirit heard the crashing of the trees in the forest. With a great thunderclap he shouted for them to stop. "I have given you life and the beauty of your leaves and fruit, and the ability to roam the earth, and you are not satisfied!" There was, another thunderclap as he spoke. "From this day on, you will be rooted in the ground and not be able to move freely on the earth. Only your seeds will be able to roam. You will lose your leaves when the cold and snow and ice come, and shall shiver in the forests until the spring, because you were not satisfied with what I had given you. Only the gentle pine, cedar, spruce and fir shall keep their tiny green leaves throughout the year and be called evergreens. They will grow tall and straight, and they will be the ones who shall hold their heads above all the other trees in the forest." And so it came to pass many years ago. To this day, while walking through a forest in the winter, you can hear the moaning of the trees that have lost their leaves as they shiver in the cold, waiting for the spring.
