Getting tangled up in a new romance on the Web is becoming more and more common. One man, Charles Gonsoulin, met a woman on the Internet and even though she lived in Canada, he felt compelled to meet her. There was only one problem. Due to a 1984 robbery conviction, Gonsoulin was barred from entering Canada. Gonsoulin said, "But I was a desperate man." He decided he would sneak across the border from Pembina, North Dakota, and visit his Canadian girlfriend in Winnipeg. The February walk "was a lot worse than I thought," Gonsoulin said, because the ground was covered in heavy snow. "When I found him, he was babbling and incoherent," said Corporal Don McKenna of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. "He didn't know who he was or where he was." So did he ever hyperlink up with his cybermate? Nope. In fact, after walking more than one hundred hours in the snow. Gonsoulin had only traveled a little over four miles. He was treated in a hospital and then deported back to the United States — well, most of him was deported. The exchange rate for his trip was pretty severe. He lost five toes and all of his fingers due to frostbite. "I will never regret it. I'm in love," Gonsoulin said. He can still surf the Net, but his bowling days are over.
