Drawing Dady
A Sunday School class of first-graders was asked to draw a picture of God. When the pastor stopped by to inspect, they were happy to show him their works. One child had depicted God in the form of a brightly-colored rainbow. Another had drawn the face of an old man coming out of some billowing clouds. And there was one rendition which looked a lot like Superman. But, best of all, there was the one proudly displayed by a little girl who said, "I didn't know what God looked like, so I just drew a picture of my daddy."
American Express Card
All eyes were on the radiant bride as her father escorted her down the Church aisle. When they arrived at the altar and stood waiting for the groom to step forward, the bride kissed her father and placed something in his hand. Whereupon, ripples of laughter could be heard coming from the guests in the front pews. Even the minister began to chuckle. It seems that as the father gave his daughter away, she gave him back his American Express card.
7-Up
Three men sat expectantly in the hospital waiting room. A nurse from the maternity wing entered the room. She said to the first man, "Congratulations! You're the father of twins." "That's a wonderful coincidence," he exclaimed. "I'm a member of the 'Minnesota Twins' baseball team." Then the nurse addressed the second man: "Congratulations! You're the father of triplets." "Wow!" said the new father, "another wonderful coincidence. I work for the '3M Company'." The third man jumped to his feet. "I'm in trouble," he said. "I work for '7-Up.'"
In Today's World
Leo Buscaglia reminds us that for many children, this Father's Day may be a painful reminder that not every family situation reflects the ideal:
In a short, informal activity to prepare second graders for the celebration of Father's Day, a group of children were asked to respond to the question, "What do you love about your dad?" Their answers were sometimes poignant and often reflective of the fact that non-traditional roles of fatherhood are fast becoming accepted as the norm.
"I love my father, Bob, because we have fun together on weekends, and I love my new father, Al, because he plays with me and fixes me breakfast every morning."
"I love my dad but I don't know where he is. I know he's somewhere because he sends us money all the time, but I don't ever see him."
"I love my dad because he always brings us things when he visits us on weekends."
