St. Ignatius proposed this question to his students, "What strategy would Satan use to seduce people and get them to follow him?" He concludes: "First, Satan would lead people from a legitimate striving for security to a wrongful striving after money — greed. Second, Satan would lead people from a legitimate striving for acceptance to a wrongful striving after recognition — honor. Finally, Satan would lead people from a legitimate appreciation of their self-worth to sinful self-indulgence — pride. Thus, Satan's strategy is to seduce people gradually, leading them from legitimate self-striving to sinful self-indulgence."
