In April 2001, a man in a Vancouver, Washington, courtroom professed his love to a woman he had dated briefly twenty-five years earlier. During his trial, John K. Flora served as his own council and questioned the woman whom he was charged with stalking. Flora badgered the woman trying to make her admit she was in love with him, a fact she consistently denied. The woman became more horrified and hostile after every question and Flora, mistaking her rage for passion, pulled out a $5,000 engagement ring and screamed, "Marry me! You mean everything to me!
