A pastor was conducting a Vacation Bible Study class on the New Testament. He discovered a word which was translated do penance, whereas another version rendered the same word as repent. He asked the children if they knew the difference between penance and repentance. A short silence was broken by a girl who asked, "Is it not this? Judas did penance and went and hanged himself, while Peter repented and wept bitterly." The doing of penance is external action, while repentance goes to the heart of the matter.
