How does a preacher know that an anecdote or humor line will get a laugh? Congregations will differ on what is funny, but what is the best way to know if an anecdote or humor line will work? Answer these questions...

First, to be funny in the pulpit, you need:

  • Good material. (Don't worry; this is the e-newsletter's job.)
  • Good delivery. (This is part your job and the e-newsletter.) We will show you how to deliver them and techniques to rehearse them.
  • Basic understanding of your congregation's beliefs and values. (Don't worry; you already know them.)
  • Basic knowledge of your delivery style.

How does a preacher know that an anecdote or humor line will get a laugh? Congregations will differ on what is funny, but what is the best way to know if an anecdote or humor line will work? Answer these questions:

  • Do you smile when you read the anecdote or humor line? If you do, flag it.
  • Can you make a point with it? If you can, flag it.
  • Will your congregation understand it? If they can, flag it.
  • Can you deliver it? If you can, flag it.

If you can answer "yes" to these four questions, you have found an anecdote or humor line to use.

Using this e-newsletter is easy. If you can navigate through the internet, you can navigate through this e-newsletter.
