I guess everyone has heard the remarkable stories about the lemmings — rugged little animals about the size of mice that, according to legends from Europe, occasionally migrate by the millions for days and nights until they reach the coast. When they reach the sea, they just keep on going, swimming straight out until they drown. We hear a curious story like that, and we wonder why such a thing happens. There are several theories about it, one of which claims that it's nature's way of regulating the lemming population — which isn't true, by the way.
