My Lai is a district in Vietnam, a beautiful place with lush trees and green fields. For centuries it has been home to villagers farming their lands. But on March 16, 1968 it became forever linked with evil. On that morning a group of US Army soldiers made their way into the Vietnamese village of My Lai on a "search and destroy" mission. They were looking for members of the VietCong army hiding in the village. Unfortunately there were no VietCong there. What the soldiers found were villagers - old men asleep in their beds, women cooking meals, and children playing. Then all hell broke loose. No one quite knows why, but the soldiers went on a rampage. In a three hour orgy of violence old men were dragged from their beds and bayoneted; women kneeling down to pray were executed; at least one teenage girl was raped and shot; babies were thrown into ditches and shot. When the guns finally stopped and over 500 unarmed civilians were dead. My Lai is a reminder that both beauty and evil are very real parts of our world. We don't need to travel to My Lai to find it. Pick up any newspaper and you're confronted with reports of evil - of rape, murder, fraud, greed. Scott Higgins. Quote this article on your site | Views: 254 | Print | E-mail
