Franklin Delano Roosevelt employed his finest talents to convert a senator to his way of thinking. When a disagreeing senator blocked some vital legislation, FDR discovered that the senator was an avid stamp collector. One night, while working on his own stamp collection, Roosevelt phoned the senator to ask his assistance. Flattered by the request, the senator came over that evening to offer his expertise. The next day a vote was due on the bill, and when roll-call was taken, the senator voted for it. The great persuader Thomas Aquinas offered this bit of advice: "When you want to convert someone to your view, you go over to where he is standing, take him by the hand (mentally speaking), and guide him. You don't stand across the room and shout at him; you don't call him a dummy; you don't order him to come over to where you are. You start where he is, and work from that position. That's the only way to get him to budge." By getting into the senator's world, FDR was able to take him by the hand and, without any mention of the issue, lead him into his court. It probably was the only way that senator would budge from his balky position. Quote this article on your site | Views: 548 | Print | E-mail
