Failing
According to a report by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, the average college senior knows less after four years of study. Students at many of the country's most prestigious college and universities are graduating with less knowledge of American history, government, and economics than they had as incoming freshmen, with Harvard University seniors scoring a "D+" average on a 60-question multiple-choice exam about civic literacy. So why does Harvard cost 40,000 a year?

Strange
Six Asiatic wild elephants were electrocuted as they went berserk after drinking rice beer in rural India. Nearly 40 elephants came to a village looking for food. Some found beer, got drunk, uprooted a utility pole carrying power lines and were electrocuted. I wonder if an elephant gets drunk, does he see "pink people."

A priest has been arrested on charges of stalking NBC Talk host Conan O'Brien.  Reverend David Ajemian of the Archdiocese of Boston was arrested while trying to enter a taping of NBC's "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" in New York. Ajemian referred to himself as "your priest stalker" in a note and complained of not being allowed in to see an earlier taping of the O'Brien show.  This is very strange until you realize that he is Catholic.  This sounds like a joke..."A priest, a rabbi and a minister were flying to New York to stalk Conan O'Brain when the plane develops engine trouble...and there was only one parachute."

Tough

Thirteen-year-old Megan Coulter has received two days detention for giving two hugs.  The eighth-grader at Illnois' Mascoutah Middle School was punished for violating a school policy banning public displays of affection when she hugged two friends recently.  I am glad I didn't go to a middle school with these strct rules because I am sure I would have been expelled.

Large

George Osmond, father of Donny and Marie Osmond and patriarch to the family's singing group "The Osmond Brothers," died this week.  He was 90.  Osmond and his wife, Olive, who died in 2004, were the parents of nine children.  The couple also had 55 grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren.  Or, as they refer to it in Utah, a "small family."

Upsetting

Three Washington, DC-area high school football players were injured following last week's game as they went through the handshake line.  After Magruder High beat rival Blake 55-7, players lined up to shake hands.  But three Magruder players felt a dull pain in the palms of the right hands and saw blood dripping after a Blake player allegedly carried a small knife and cut the hands of the three.  It's nice to know that schools still teach sportsmanship!
