Once upon a time, there was a magic Christmas tree that was positioned exactly in the middle of the world. It was beautifully decorated with presents and tinsel and colored candles. And all the little children would come running to see it when the candles were lighted. Most children could come to the tree whenever they desired, but a few were sick, and some were too poor - they had to work in the mines. Some had difficulties with their legs and their feet, and they could not walk to see the beautiful tree. Looking around at the children gathered beneath the branches of the magic tree, the One who provided it asked the little children, "Where are the others?" After a moment of silence one little boy answered. "They couldn't come. And it's too bad because they'll miss all these beautiful presents." Then another child spoke up. "They don't deserve a Christmas tree." And one more said, "There won't be enough presents for us if they come." "That's right," said a selfish little girl, "we need the presents, and besides, those other children are dirty — and some are sick." And all the children who had gathered that day agreed that the magic tree was only for themselves. Then the One who provided the tree said, "But I wanted all of the little children of the world to enjoy this tree, every single one — rich and poor, sick and well, clean and soiled." When the children realized how disappointed He was, they ran away. They decided that they should each bring back another little boy or girl to enjoy the magic tree with them. And they prepared more packages to provide for the others. They searched the mines and the hospitals, and they found some children in tiny little dark rooms. They searched and they searched until each one had found another child and they all came running back to the tree - together. And when they returned, they found that the magic Christmas tree was now growing bigger and brighter with more candles and presents. And all of the children of the world stood under its branches and began to sing carols to the King of Kings. Even the angel on top of the tree sang. But the One who provided the tree was the happiest of all. He knew that the real Christmas could only come when all of the children of the world shared in its happiness and rejoicing.
