Proverbs 31:10-31 Theme: wisdom ; worth
Theme one-liner: women
A Wife of Noble Character10Who
can find a virtuous and capable wife ? She is worth more than precious rubies.
11Her husband can trust her, and she will
greatly enrich his life. 12She will not
hinder him but help him all her life.
13She finds wool and flax and
busily spins it. 14She is like a
merchant's ship; she brings her food from afar. 15She gets up before dawn to prepare breakfast for her
household and plan the day's work for her servant girls.
16She goes out to inspect a field and buys it; with her
earnings she plants a vineyard.
17She is energetic and strong, a
hard worker . 18She watches for bargains;
her lights burn late into the night. 19Her hands are busy spinning thread, her fingers
twisting fiber.
20She extends a helping hand to
the poor and opens her arms to the needy.
21She has no fear of winter for
her household because all of them have warm clothes. 22She quilts her own bedspreads. She dresses like royalty
in gowns of finest cloth.
23Her husband is well known, for
he sits in the council meeting with the other civic leaders.
24She makes belted linen garments
and sashes to sell to the merchants.
25She is clothed with strength and
dignity, and she laughs with no fear of the future. 26When she speaks, her words are wise, and kindness is
the rule when she gives instructions . 27She carefully watches all that goes on in her household
and does not have to bear the consequences of laziness.
28Her children stand and bless
her. Her husband praises her: 29"There
are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all!"
30Charm is deceptive, and beauty
does not last; but a woman who fears the LORD will be greatly praised. 31Reward her for all she has done. Let her
deeds publicly declare her praise.

Psalm 1 Theme: delight
Theme one-liner: righteous ; law
Psalm 1
1
Oh, the joys of
those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or stand
around with sinners,
or join in with scoffers .
2
But they delight in doing
everything the LORD wants;
day and night they think about his law.
3
They are like trees
planted along the riverbank,
bearing fruit each season without
fail.
Their leaves never wither,
and in all they do, they
prosper .
4
But this is not true of
the wicked .
They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind.
5
They will be condemned at
the time of judgment.
Sinners will have no place among the godly.
6
For the LORD watches over
the path of the godly,
but the path of the wicked leads to
destruction.

Mark 9:30-37 Theme: greatness ; welcome
Theme one-liner: death ; poor
Jesus Again Predicts His Death30Leaving that region, they traveled through Galilee.
Jesus tried to avoid all publicity 31in
order to spend more time with his disciples and teach them. He said to them,
"The Son of Man is going to be betrayed . He will be killed, but three days later
he will rise from the dead." 32But they
didn't understand what he was saying, and they were afraid to ask him what he
meant.
The Greatest in the Kingdom33After they arrived at Capernaum, Jesus and his
disciples settled in the house where they would be staying. Jesus asked them,
"What were you discussing out on the road?" 34But they didn't answer, because they had been arguing
about which of them was the greatest. 35He sat down and called the twelve disciples over to
him. Then he said, "Anyone who wants to be the first must take last place and be
the servant of everyone else."
36Then he put a little child among
them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, 37"Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my
behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes my Father who sent me."

James 3:13-4:3, 7-8 Theme: quarrels
Theme one-liner: jealous ; peace ; brag ; hypocrite
True Wisdom Comes from God13If you are wise and understand God's ways, live of steady goodness so that
only good deeds will pour forth. And if you don't brag about the good you do,
then you will be truly wise! 14But if you
are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your hearts, don't brag
about being wise. That is the worst kind of lie . 15For jealousy and selfishness are not God's kind of
wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and motivated by the Devil. 16For wherever there is jealousy and selfish
ambition, there you will find disorder and every kind of evil.
17But the wisdom that comes from
heaven is first of all pure. It is also peace loving , gentle at all times, and
willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no
partiality and is always sincere. 18And
those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of
goodness.
James 4
Drawing Close to God1What is
causing the quarrels and fights among you? Isn't it the whole army of evil
desires at war within you? 2You want what
you don't have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous for what
others have, and you can't possess it, so you fight and quarrel to take it away
from them. And yet the reason you don't have what you want is that you don't ask
God for it. 3And even when you do ask,
you don't get it because your whole motive is wrong--you want only what will
give you pleasure.
7So humble yourselves before God.
Resist the Devil, and he will flee from you. 8Draw close to God, and God will draw close to you. Wash
your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, you hypocrites .
