In a large downtown Church, a communal baptism had been arranged for several children and adults. On the day of the baptism, the Church was filled to capacity. Because he had expected a large attendance, the pastor was careful to remind the younger baptismal candidates to answer the ritual questions "loud and clear." When the first boy was asked, "Do you believe in God the Father?" he answered in a voice all could hear, "I do believe." As each child answered the questions in turn, the urge to upstage took over, resulting in a steady increase in volume, each child answering louder than the one before. Finally the pastor came to the last child and began to ask her the questions of faith. "Do you believe in God the Father?" "I do believe," she fairly shouted. "Do you believe in God the Son?" Still louder came her answer, "I do believe." "And do you believe in the Holy Spirit?" This time there was a pause. Then, in a quieter tone, she replied, "I believe I do."
