We must read the signs-of-the-times, knowing that we share in the responsibility for things as they are and that we stand under constant judgment. God's judgment is upon us now for things as they are. We should be fearful of a social order in which some human beings are victims of famine and others are victims of over-eating. We should be fearful of a social order in which the full range of medical resources is available to the affluent and pestilence is reserved for the poor. We should be fearful of a social order permanently afflicted with wars and rumors of wars. Tortures, persecutions, assassinations; hatreds, betrayals and "love growing cold" — we have seen them all; many we have experienced first-hand. And the constant judgment we live under is rendered not merely on the basis of whether or not we are parties to these evils, nor merely on the basis of whether or not we fear them. The definitive judgment we are under is whether or not we fear them enough. Do we fear the evil of social injustice enough to attend to the works of justice — or do we simply cave in? Do we fear the evil of mass killing enough to attend to the works of peace —or do we merely bow and scrape before the false prophets of war and destruction? Do we fear the evil of "love growing cold" enough to tender our own full measure of love — or do we passively submit to the forces of hatred and persecution?
