The Golden Hill area of San Diego enjoys a wide divergence of cultures — Asians, Blacks, Hispanics, and Whites. However, the forced intimacy in apartments and ancient houses often irritates personal relationships. The Golden Hill Mediation Center serves as a clearing house between disputants before they reach the police station or courts. Volunteer mediators, carefully screened and selected from numerous applicants, strive to find a middle ground where both parties can accept less than each wanted. Their 89 percent success rate proves that most people would rather solve conflicts than prolong or litigate them.
Mediation works fine when resolving differences in human relationships. Applying this principle where unrepentant humanity has a difference with God, however, has a 100 percent failure rate. We delude ourselves if we think we can discuss the matter of our insubordination with God as though we were his equals; as though we had any input into the agreement; as though God had left open a discussion about it; as if he had suddenly determined not to rule the universe! God makes no deals and strikes no bargains. He makes the rules, and we must abide by them. He establishes the conditions, and we must live with them. He determines truth, and we can take it or leave it — that or nothing!
