Scientist Edward Stein has written about his passing through a period of severe doubt into a new understanding of God. He says that when he began to experience a real reverence for what he called the "Ultimate," he would ask, "What is it?" (Notice, the "it".) Then it became, "Who is He?" until he began to have difficulty of thinking of God as a "He." Finally, his question became, "Who is the Mysterious Spirit that heals us, that binds us together, that rebuilds broken families, that heals the psychotically estranged, that evokes tenderness and forgiveness and hope in us? Who is the Mysterious Spirit that conceived the delicate wonder of childhood, the sensuous warmth of mature beauty, the gnarled gray wisdom of age, the endless mystery of life and death, tears and laughter?" "I don't know," he says, "but I trust this love, I sense this presence, I have felt the power." Here is a modern man who has begun that inward turn toward the "Holy" which is vital and crucial in dealing with the problem of belief. Only a deep sense of awe and wonder and reverence for the Ultimate can open us up to the evidence of God's goodness we receive from Jesus.
