Agnes Keith gave away most of her cosmetics when she first went into captivity in Borneo, thinking them an irrelevant luxury. For a while it didn't matter. Then, at Kuching, she discovered her mistake. All the women found makeup necessary for their morale. In time, Keith wrote, face powder sold for $10 a teaspoon, lipstick couldn't be found at any price, and cold cream was nearly as scarce and precious. Often, the ruder and simpler life becomes, the less it takes to rehabilitate our confidence. In the internment camps, where every enemy tactic brutalized and simplified life, small, apparently superficial items enable; the women to preserve their self-esteem. God understands our need to have the basics of clothing, food, and shelter. Deprived of them, we still live, but only marginally and subsistently. God will not deny us the basics. In fact, he promises to provide them for us if we seek his will. He does insist, however, that we avoid making those basics into essentials, thinking that they make us complete. He alone is essential to us. Let us bless any circumstance that develops our awareness of helplessness without him. Quote this article on your site | Views: 355 | Print | E-mail
