When Red Auerbach coached the dynasty-producing Boston Celtics, he carefully outlined each pre-game talk. Auerbach took great pride in making each pep talk an original. However, during the NBA championships one year, he found himself at a loss for words. Turning to his star player, Auerbach asked Frank Ramsay if he had any words of wisdom for the team. Ramsay gave the invitation a little thought, then approached the blackboard and wrote, "You win ... $10,000! You lose ... $5,000!" That was all the pre-game pep talk the Celtics needed.
