A cheerful heart is good medicine.
Proverbs 17:22
Current News Humor

Laughter is the sensation of feeling good all over and showing it principally in one place. --Josh Billings

Lectionary Passages for October 1st, 2006    Proper 21 (26)      [Year B]

Esther 7:1-6   Theme: murder
Theme one-liner:  drinking ; trivial

Esther 7

The King Executes Haman
1So the king and Haman went to Queen Esther's banquet. 2And while they were drinking wine that day, the king again asked her, "Tell me what you want, Queen Esther. What is your request ? I will give it to you, even if it is half the kingdom!"

3And so Queen Esther replied, "If Your Majesty is pleased with me and wants to grant my request, my petition is that my life and the lives of my people will be spared. 4For my people and I have been sold to those who would kill, slaughter, and annihilate us. If we had only been sold as slaves, I could remain quiet, for that would have been a matter too trivial to warrant disturbing the king."

5"Who would do such a thing?" King Xerxes demanded. "Who would dare touch you?"

6Esther replied, "This wicked Haman is our enemy ." Haman grew pale with fright before the king and queen.

Esther 7:9-10

9Then Harbona, one of the king's eunuchs, said, "Haman has set up a gallows that stands seventy-five feet tall in his own courtyard. He intended to use it to hang Mordecai, the man who saved the king from assassination."

"Then hang Haman on it!" the king ordered. 10So they hanged Haman on the gallows he had set up for Mordecai, and the king's anger was pacified.

Esther 9:20-22   Theme:  gladness ; sorrow
Theme one-liner:  celebrate ; joy

The Festival of Purim
20Mordecai recorded these events and sent letters to the Jews near and far, throughout all the king's provinces, 21encouraging them to celebrate an annual festival on these two days. 22He told them to celebrate these days with feasting and gladness and by giving gifts to each other and to the poor. This would commemorate a time when the Jews gained relief from their enemies, when their sorrow was turned into gladness and their mourning into joy.

Psalm 124   Theme:  danger ; praise
Theme one-liner:  deliverance ; thankful

Psalm 124

A song for the ascent to Jerusalem. A psalm of David.
   1
If the LORD had not been on our side--
       let Israel now say--

    2
if the LORD had not been on our side
when people rose up against us,

    3
they would have swallowed us alive
because of their burning anger against us.

    4
    The waters would have engulfed us;
a torrent would have overwhelmed us.

    5
Yes, the raging waters of their fury
would have overwhelmed our very lives.

    6
    Blessed be the LORD,
who did not let their teeth tear us apart!

    7
We escaped like a bird from a hunter's trap.
The trap is broken, and we are free !

    8
Our help is from the LORD,
who made the heavens and the earth.

Mark 9:38-50   Theme:  sin ; obstacle
Theme one-liner:  reward

Using the Name of Jesus
38John said to Jesus, "Teacher, we saw a man using your name to cast out demons, but we told him to stop because he isn't one of our group ."

39"Don't stop him!" Jesus said. "No one who performs miracles in my name will soon be able to speak evil of me. 40Anyone who is not against us is for us. 41If anyone gives you even a cup of water because you belong to the Messiah, I assure you, that person will be rewarded.

42"But if anyone causes one of these little ones who trusts in me to lose faith , it would be better for that person to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around the neck. 43If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off . It is better to enter heaven with only one hand than to go into the unquenchable fires of hell with two hands. 45If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better to enter heaven with only one foot than to be thrown into hell with two feet. 47And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out. It is better to enter the Kingdom of God half blind than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, 48`where the worm never dies and the fire never goes out.'

49"For everyone will be purified with fire. 50Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? You must have the qualities of salt among yourselves and live in peace with each other."

James 5:13-20   Theme:  prayer ; heal
Theme one-liner:  suffer ; forgiveness

The Power of Prayer
13Are any among you suffering ? They should keep on praying about it. And those who have reason to be thankful should continually sing praises to the Lord.

14Are any among you sick ? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And their prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make them well. And anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven.
16Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results . 17Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for the next three and a half years! 18Then he prayed for rain, and down it poured. The grass turned green, and the crops began to grow again.

Restore Wandering Believers
19My dear brothers and sisters, if anyone among you wanders away from the truth and is brought back again, 20you can be sure that the one who brings that person back will save that sinner from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins.
