The LaughingStock newsletter is a sample of humor following this week?s news and Revised Common Lectionary.

To use this newsletter effectively, you must find at least one line that you can use in your sermon.  Read all the one-liners.  Look for a one-liner that fits your message and makes you smile when you read it.  Mark that one-liner down.

Edit and personalize that one-liner to best fit in your sermon message.  Comedians call this editing work switching.

Remember that a one-liner has three parts to use it effectively:

  • The Introduction - Usually a transition word to postition the one-liner in the sermon.
  • The one-liner.
  • An Exit - Usually the point-to-be-made.

The best rules for delivering a one-liner are to be yourself and to prepare by rehearsing the one liner.

The question you might be asking, ?Is using humor in a sermon all that necessary??

Humor is important because:

  • It makes you look professional.
  • It helps with the retention of the sermon message.
  • It can hold congregation?s attention.
  • It makes your sermon more enjoyable for both you and your congregation.
  • Today, people generally expect it.

We hope you join this e-newsletter and keep your congregation laughing and coming back.
