When Alexander von Humbolt, the German traveler and naturalist, experienced his first earthquake, the house he was in began to crack and fall around him. Hastily he sought refuge in another house, but found that it too was in ruins. Lifting his eyes to the hills, he saw that they were reeling and staggering like drunken men. Looking to the sea, he saw the bare keel of a ship in the mud, for the waters had fled. The ground under his feet trembled; there was no place of security anywhere. In his despair he looked up, and there above the ruins he saw that the heavens were unmoved. There let us lift our eyes in every hour of trial and trouble, and like King Hezekiah, let us seek our help from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
