Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy died on January 22, 1995, at the age of 104. This matriarch of one of America's most prominent families was a remarkable woman: daughter of John F. Fitzgerald, Boston mayor and congressman; wife of Joseph Kennedy, a United States ambassador; mother of a president and two U.S. senators. She had every right to be proud. Her monetary fortune, social connections, and political instincts converged to create a powerful, influential person at home and throughout America. Few mothers have had to endure more suffering and sacrifice than Rose Kennedy. Four of her nine children were killed: two died in plane crashes and two were assassinated. And Rosemary, her daughter, has lived in a home for the retarded for over fifty years. As if this were not enough, a grandson died from a drug overdose. And then, there was the Chappaquiddick incident involving Senator Edward Kennedy and Mary Jo Kopechne. What a mountain of human pain! Mrs. Kennedy once referred to her life as living through "a series of agonies and ecstasies." An ardent and faithful Roman Catholic, she demonstrated again and again an enviable Christian faith. "God wants us to be happy," she once said. "Birds sing after a storm. Why shouldn't we?" Quote this article on your site | Views: 200 | Print | E-mail
