The little son of the commander of an American man-of-war, lying in the Bay of Naples, one day climbed the rigging and stood upon the main truck, at very top of the mast. The sailors looked at him in amazement. The father coming on deck discovered his peril. Should the boy fall upon deck his death was sure. His father seized a gun, and bringing it to his shoulder, shouted through his speaking trumpet, "Jump into the water, or I'll shoot you!" He obeyed, cleared the ship's side, and was soon rescued by the sailors. His father's apparent cruelty was the truest love, and his only salvation.
