Ever felt that you needed to forgive someone? If so, raise your hand. Ever felt that someone needed to forgive you? Raise your hand if that's happened, too. Forgiveness—authentic forgiveness— can take time. If you happen to be the city of Istanbul, it can take 800 years. You see, the city of Istanbul was attacked and looted by Crusaders in 1204. In 2001, during a visit to Greece, Pope John Paul II publicly apologized for the Roman Catholic Church's support of the Crusaders' campaign. And three years later, on the 800th anniversary of Istanbul's fall, Orthodox Christian Patriarch Bartholomew I formally accepted the Pope's apology. Apology and acceptance are the first steps toward forgiveness...which I hope won't require another 800 years. Quote this article on your site | Views: 322 | Print | E-mail
