Government annuities to the Indian tribes in the nineteenth century were ordinarily paid in June. Usually late, the tribes patiently waited their arrival. But in 1862 the money — $71,000 in gold coin — did not arrive at the Indian Agency in Minnesota until August 18. Just the day before, four hungry Indians had stolen eggs from a farmer, who killed them in retaliation. This led to reprisals from the tribes and to the great Sioux uprising, which resulted in the deaths of over seven hundred whites and forty-six Indians before the uprising was quelled. The time for peace had come and gone — by only one day. So many people plan to accept Christ sometime, but not yet. They intend to later, but not now. Maybe when they are sure where they will settle down, or when vacation is over, or a new job begins, or the new house is purchased. Many promise to do it at Easter or Christmas. How casually we promise God the future — which isn't ours to give — and selfishly keep the present — which is all we have to give. How many have intended to accept Christ at such and such a time, only to have others weeping over their death before that time! Quote this article on your site | Views: 284 | Print | E-mail
