An unknown author said, "The purpose of goals is to focus our attention. The mind will not reach toward achievement until it has clear objectives. The magic begins when we set goals. It is then that the switch is turned on, the current begins to flow, and the power to accomplish becomes reality."
Wayne Gretzky experienced the power and magic of goals. At age 17, he was an outstanding athlete intent on pursuing a career in either soccer or hockey. His first love was hockey, but when he tried out for the pros, he was told, "You don't weigh enough. At 172 pounds, you are over fifty pounds lighter than the average player. You won't be able to survive on the rink."
An old Greek proverb says, "Before you can score, you must have a goal." And Wayne knew how to score. "I go where the hockey puck is going," he said. He made liars of those who doubted his abilities by becoming hockey's all-time leading scorer. Gretzky had a goal undaunted by the naysayers.
Today, Wayne Gretzky enjoys a multimillion-dollar hockey contract and endorsements producing equal wealth. He is living proof that it is not as important to know where the puck is as it is to know where it is going.
